Suspension

  • Steel springs without PASM (base models)
  • Steel springs with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management)
  • Air suspension with PASM

Each system has its own maintenance considerations, but air suspension vehicles in particular tend to be more complex and costly to repair.

Common issues

Over time, air suspension components can develop leaks, typically in the struts, valve block or associated lines. These leaks often lead to increased compressor workload, which can eventually result in compressor failure. On vehicles with conventional steel suspension, wear in control arm bushes is more typical, often presenting as knocking noises or uneven tyre wear.

Maintenance considerations

Owners should be attentive to changes in ride height or unusual compressor activity—particularly if the compressor continues running for extended periods after start-up. Any suspension warning messages should be investigated promptly, as continued driving with faults can accelerate wear and increase repair costs. Wheel alignment is also critical following any suspension work to ensure correct handling and tyre longevity.

Cost overview

Air suspension repairs can be expensive, particularly when struts require replacement. Compressors fall into a moderate-to-high cost range. Vehicles equipped with conventional steel suspension generally offer lower long-term maintenance costs.


Brakes

Given the Panamera’s weight and performance capabilities, the braking system is subjected to considerable stress in everyday driving.

Depending on specification, the vehicle may be equipped with:

  • Standard steel braking systems
  • Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB)
  • Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB)

Common issues

Brake wear tends to occur relatively quickly, particularly under more spirited driving conditions. Steel braking systems commonly produce noticeable brake dust, while worn pads can lead to noise or vibration. Vehicles that are driven infrequently may also experience corrosion on brake discs.

Steel braking systems are generally manageable in terms of cost, although they may require more frequent servicing. PSCB and PCCB systems offer reduced dust and extended lifespan, but any damage or replacement can be significantly more expensive.


Electronics

Modern Panameras incorporate a wide range of electronic systems that control both comfort and performance features. While these systems are highly effective, they are also heavily dependent on stable electrical supply.

Key systems include:

  • Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment
  • Driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control
  • Suspension and drivetrain control modules
  • Comfort features including keyless entry and soft-close doors
Common issues

Many electronic faults can be traced back to battery condition or voltage irregularities. Low voltage can trigger multiple warning lights, sensor errors or intermittent system faults. PCM-related issues, including screen glitches or system freezes, are also not uncommon. Following battery replacement, some vehicles may display warning messages until systems are properly reset.

Maintenance considerations

Using the correct AGM battery specification is essential. Vehicles that are not driven regularly should have their battery condition monitored or maintained with a suitable charger to prevent voltage drop. After battery replacement, certain systems may require reinitialisation using appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Cost overview

While many electronic issues are relatively minor, diagnosing them can be time-consuming and may require specialist equipment. As a result, diagnostic costs can be higher than expected even for simple faults.

Fixing the timing chain on my own Panamera....

Adrian's Panamera Engine Exposed

We are starting to find the timing chains on the 4.8 V8 engines in both the Panamera & Cayenne are starting to wear or “stretch”.This extra length in the chain allows the camshaft timing to “deviate” causing check engine lights and eventually, if left unchecked, possible engine damage.

This happened to my 2010 Panamera S, at about
180,000 kms – it was time to do some work on my own car!

The factory workshop manual states, the first step is “Remove engine & transmission complete.” This is not necessary, as you can easily access the front of the engine with the radiator support removed. This expediates the repair process immensely. This repair process also works for all Cayenne models as well.

With a new cam chain, guide rails and chain tensioner. The car was back on the road and ready for another 180,000kms
